Subhi, Indian-American Artist is awarded the prestigious 2019 Individual Artist program (IAP) Grant by the City of Chicago

CHICAGO, May 10, 2019 -- Subhi, a Chicago based Indian-American artist is awarded the prestigious Individual Artist program (IAP) Grant by the City of Chicago to partially fund her upcoming studio album. The first single from her upcoming album is available on all leading digital channels including Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube Music, Amazon Music and more. More listening options can be found here: https://song.link/chaand

“I am so thrilled to be a part of the IAP program,” says Subhi, a SXSW 2019 showcase artist. “It is an honor to be selected for this prestigious grant. I will be using the grant towards my upcoming folk-pop studio album. Half of the songs on this album will be in Hindi and half will be in English.”

The Individual Artists Program aims to assist Chicago’s professional artists in creating work that elevates their careers and brings value to the City of Chicago. Project-based grants are made across Chicago projects, touring projects, mobile and city-wide projects, works in progress, social practice and professional advancement, and creative research.

“The experts in music discipline that reviewed Subhi’s application were very excited about it,” says Kalena Chevalier, program director of Cultural Grants at DCASE. “They thought it was a really original concept and expanding audiences for her artistic work.”

As an emerging Indian American artist, Subhi was born in New Delhi, studied in New York and now lives in Chicago. Both the Indian and American cultures define Subhi as an individual and as an artist. She embraces this contrast and acknowledges that she should not have to choose between the two cultures. Her upcoming album is a celebration of her two cultures and the world we live in.

“The music panel liked the dichotomy of the content and that it was going to include two different languages,” Chevalier continues. “There’s a lot of audience reach potential, creativity, and originality to her work.”

In May, Subhi was invited to speak and perform at the Facebook offices in Chicago as part of the Asian American Heritage month. Last year, Subhi performed at the world renowned Kennedy Center of Performing Arts and opened for the band, ‘Red Baraat’ during their Festival of Colors Midwest Tour. With Subhi’s multicultural-inspired performances, she became a speaker and performer for ‘Talks at Google’ series at Google Headquarters, a featured artist for ABC’s Emmy Award winning annual show, ‘Asian Influences’, receiving an invitation to perform live at ABC7 Studio, and a featured speaker and performer for TEDx Naperville. Her next appearance will be at the office of Facebook Chicago where she will be a guest speaker and performer.

"I am very excited to release my single titled Chaand Ka Chilka, meaning Peel of the Moon. This is the first song that I wrote for my upcoming album. For this single, I really wanted to go back to my roots of rich Hindi lyrical form and western pop electronic compositions. The music video in particular is very special to me. I had the pleasure of working with Pulkit Datta, to help encapsulate my story and vision.”, said Subhi.

Subhi also released a music video for the single which is available on Youtube: Watch Now

As an emerging Indian American artist Subhi was born in New Delhi, studied in New York and now lives in Chicago. Both the Indian and American cultures define Subhi as an individual and as an artist. Subhi’s music promotes cross-cultural exchange of creative ideas between Indian music and Chicago's vibrant Jazz. The talk was titled “My Bollywood Jazz: The Beauty of Not Having a Plan”. She shared how her journey to Bollywood took a turn towards Chicago Jazz. Subhi talked about how the songs were created during her travels between Mumbai & Chicago; and how they lead to an accidental album. She released her debut album titled Shaitaan Dil (Naughty Heart) in September last year. As part of the show, she performed some of her original compositions.

The talk can be found on Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAWSrcU_TXk

“The heart does what it wants. I almost feel like my heart has a mind of its own. It has its own agenda. This wasn’t what I planned for, but at times, you have to follow your instinct and your heart,” Subhi muses. “All through this journey, I had no idea where I was going. Logically, it made no sense. But my heart would not let go. It had its own agenda. I believe, it is alright not to have a plan. In fact, it is better not to have a plan because then your mind is free, you will get a chance to follow your heart.”

Talks at Google, a regular speaker series, promises to bring the world's most influential thinkers, creators, makers and doers all in one place. Talks at Google has hosted some of the world’s most famous musicians including Andrea Bocelli, Paul Cohen, The Avett Brothers and international artists including Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, Kailash Kher, and Arijit Singh.
